If you want to blog to make money then you must know what you want your blog to be about. Blogging is a wonderful thing that the internet gave to the people so we can all share our ideas and knowledge without having to pay for it.

The first thing you want to know is what topic you want to blog about. It could be anything at all and the more specific it is, the better results you can get. I will explain why in a second. So it would make sense to blog about an interest or passion you have. Maybe you enjoy playing guitar and know how to read tabs so you can setup tab diagrams on your blog to teach people. Trust me it works wonders.

Now once you know your topic you must research to see what the balance of supply and demand is. Meaning how many people want to learn about this topic, and how many websites are providing the information. I find the most efficient way of doing this is to use a keyword tool. You should go to Google and use their AdWords tool. Type in your topic and be specific. Then go down the list of keywords. It makes it so easy a little kid can do it. It is best to pick a keyword that has a lot of people searching for it but not as much competition. That means if you use that keyword that must be relevant to your topic. You can eventually get a lot of those people who want to learn about the topic because you will be one of the few supplying it. Make sense? So use a few keywords that have little competition but a descent amount of people wanting to learn about it. Use them in your title, keywords section, or description.That is what blogging to make money is all about!

So once you have an excellent topic that has a good (we will call it) supply/demand ratio you have got the hard part over with. Now time to blog to make money. Write a lot of rich content about your passion or interest and let your fingers do the typing. Content is King! You also want to make sure you post regularly. Just do at least one post a day.

Now in order to make some money you want to post some ads relevant to your topic. So the easiest ways to do this is to find companies that produce products relevant to your blog. It must be one of the most common questions asked by people looking to make money online. Can I make money from blogging? Given the ease of use and the tiny investment required (we're talking pizza money here), it's not surprising that people look at blogging as an option.

Well the good news is, you bet your sweet little PC you can!

But you can make money online in numerous ways if you have the drive and determination, so why choose blogging?

Well let's briefly look at those low entry costs. WordPress, probably the most popular blogging platform (software) is actually free. Then there's getting paid for your opinions or what you write. Some companies will pay you to review their products and services. It's not huge money per article but if you could write a couple a day, about the length of the one you're reading now, you could be looking at $1000 a month or more. It will take time to build to that level but it's quite do-able.

What about developing your own product. It's never been easier to create your own ebook and using a blog to promote it can be hugely profitable. Whole online business empires have been built on that idea, making their owners millions.

The missing part of the formula so far is that nasty four-letter word WORK. None of this happens without it. It's not hard work - you're not going to get any blisters - but it does require consistent effort. Only got a few hours a week? That's fine - exactly how most people start. If you think doing it for a fortnight is going to have you making a living online though, think again.

On the other hand, a few months from now you could be on the way to radically changing your future. Blogging can make ordinary people - with no special skills or experience - more money, faster, than probably any other opportunity that has ever existed. Think long and hard about your life. Think about your skills. What do you do for work? What do you like to do in your spare time? What are your hobbies? What are your unique skills? Do you have children? Do you have pets? What are your dreams and aspirations? What is unique about you? What is unique about what you know versus what other people know? You can easily use the answers to these questions in your quest to find a good blog topic.

If you have trouble answering the questions above then find someone close to you and ask them to answer the questions about you. Find out what others would suggest you might want to publish a blog about. Often you cannot see what is right before you, but others who are close to you can. You might be surprised at the great ideas they might come up with for you. Listen to their suggestions. Answer the questions for yourself, and decide on a good topic.

The most important thing you can do is to blog about something interesting, both interesting to you and to other people. Something you either know a lot about, or have the desire to learn a lot about. For example, I may find that a topic like "lime green paint" would be good blog topic for search engine optimization and AdSense, however after about three posts then what would I write about that could possibly be interesting to anyone? There probably isn't much after those first three posts to write about. This would make lime green paint probably not the best topic for my blog.

You will need to strike a balance between search engine optimization, AdSense ad block placement, your knowledge of your potential topic, and your interests.

Finding a topic you like and are knowledgeable about helps you be able to write interesting posts. Your posts do not have to be brilliant works of literary art. They simply have to be engaging, interesting, and most of all fairly frequent. You will find blogging to be the easiest and most enjoyable if you pick a good topic for yourself.

Trust me when I say that you are setting your blog up for failure if you choose a topic based solely on search engine optimization and AdSense yet don't have any real interest in the topic. You will likely run out of interesting things to say before too long and your readers will get bored and not stick around. You will also find that you do not have the motivation needed over the long-haul if you choose something you do not enjoy writing about. The next criteria for your niche is deciding who's spending money in the niche, how much they spend, and whether you can design your blog to scoop cash out of this money pool.

For example, perhaps your partner has just gone on the latest diet. You know that "weight loss" is a million dollar niche, and you don't actively dislike it. In fact, you're quite interested in this niche. You do some research and find a sub-niche (low carb recipes). Then you find find ten affiliate programs you could promote, and you're ready for the next strategy.

2. Develop a System: One Blog or Many?

The best way to do this is to search on Google for your keywords or key phrase and ask the top ten ranking web sites to link to your blog. You may have to be creative about this, using what we like to call link bait. This can be anything that entices another web site owner to link to your site. Because your site will be new and most top ten ranking sites know a thing or two about search engine optimization, you probably won't be able to just get a link exchange - no one wants to link to a brand new blog for two reasons, one is that new bloggers have a tendency to lose interest after a while and you find yourself linking to a blog that never gets updated, and two is because the site has no Google PageRank. If you offer your potential linkers something else, you may have more success. For example, I once ran a campaign for a client that swapped links for a discount on my client's products. Whatever it is you swap for a link is up to you, be creative.

You want to add your web site to blog directories and blog resources such as Technorati. If you haven't spent literally a week straight doing this, you haven't found nearly all of them. There are so many! Your best bet is to search Google for a list of blog directories.

Ask your friends or colleagues to Digg each of your blog posts using digg.com

Add links to the bottom of every post that will allow readers to add to delicious, post to facebook, myspace, stumble upon, etc. Use as much 2.0 power as you possibly can. Get a Twitter account and tweet as much as you can, follow as many users as you can. Make sure every profile you've ever made for yourself or your business on any site, has a link to your blog. Make sure your blog address is everywhere, when you comment on others' blogs, when you talk in forums, etc.

You want to make sure you have an advertising policy available on your web site for potential advertisers to read, and as many different ways for them to contact you.

When all of this is set up and ready, it's time to send out a Press Release. Make sure it is enticing and boldly underlines how this blog is different and why people will want to read it. Submit your press release to as many press release distributors as possible. Again, just search on Google and you'll find a ton. Some cost money, some are free.

Now it's time to post. Make sure your posts have personality. No one wants to read a dry technical blog. You want to make sure your own personality comes out in each and every post. Also, the more controversy, the better. A controversial post will entice readers to send the link to their friends and family in either horror or pride - both are equally as good! It will also encourage comments and repeat visits when something heated has been posted to the comments and the poster wants to come back to check the responses. It will also encourage repeat commenters and some will be compelled to subscribe to your blog. Make it controversial enough and you may even hit the mainstream news, such as Michelle Malkin did recently when she objected to the scarf Rachael Ray was wearing in a Dunkin' Donuts ad.

Submit all of your article length posts to article databases utilizing the author's bio as a spot for a link back to your blog. Hopefully people will syndicate these on their own sites keeping the bio in tact and thus, creating more links to your blog.

Some people use traffic exchanges such as BlogExplosion or Blog Soldiers and while it does actually increase your traffic, most of that traffic is useless. The only one I have ever found that actually results in real readers, is BlogExplosion.com. These sites are not entirely useless, however, as they do have directories that your blog is submitted to when you join. And there are no obligations after joining, so I would suggest doing so just to get into the directories as they are even more links to your blog.

Make sure you blog regularly, but not too much. Many people subscribe to RSS feeds as a much faster way to get their daily reading in. Blogs with a lot of daily headlines, generally get skimmed and sometimes just deleted when there's no time. But blogs that only have a post a week, can tend to be forgotten about. My suggestion is to keep it to once daily, and at the very least, 3 or 4 times per week. If you are going to be unable to post for a period of time, vacation or something, post and let your readers know so that they don't think it's just another blog gone stale.

In the meantime, add Google Adsense to your blog, perhaps Amazon a-store and any high-quality affiliate programs that can relate to your blog's subject matter.

If you keep all of this up, you will have advertising revenue. The key though, is patience. Keep at it and don't get discouraged. Publicizing any web site can take months upon months before you see results. But once you do, it's highly worth it. You may even want to design and sell your own merchandise for further revenue.

Before we can talk about search engine optimization you need to know and understand the very basics of how a search engine works. While the process is very mathematical and way more complex than most people care to know about, I will try and give you a very simple explanation.

A search engine, such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc... sends a "spider" to a new website. This spider is simply a bit of code, or a program if you will, which "crawls" the website. Crawling the website is simply a matter of copying the pages and then downloading a copy of them to the search engine's web server.

Once the site has been crawled by the spider, the search engine then indexes the information from the pages it now has copies of. The indexing is all about keywords, tags, and what the site itself is all about.

When you go to Google and put in a keyword to search for, your "search results" page is based in the indexed pages from this process.

So, a search engine basically sends a spider to your pages, crawls them, copies them down to their own server, indexes the information on them, and then uses their index when someone does a search. It's not really that simplistic of a process, but as far as what most of us need to know that is basically what happens.

Internet marketing can be a boat load of fun when done correctly. Internet marketing can also be most confusing and frustrating when it doesn't work the way you expected. Ultimately you are left scratching your head like so many thousands before you. It doesn't have to be that way.

There are literally countless ways to make money online but I have found so many that had me spinning my wheels. What works for me will work for you as well so, my suggestion is to find something you are knowledgeable about and start blogging about that. For me personally it is my hobbies that I am most knowledgeable and passionate about so that is where I focus my internet marketing energy.

I started my online business thinking that every one was my target audience and for that reason I spent my first year wondering what I was doing wrong. Since that time I have learned to focus on what I know and creating content around my knowledge.

Example: I decided to go with a fishing site because I am so fanatical about fishing but I didn't do so well. I even dropped the idea of having a fishing site all together until I started blogging and that is when it got a whole lot easier.

Now I blog about fishing but more locally than globally and after a few months of building my blog with content I started getting traffic. From there I monetized my fishing blog and started to earn a bit of cash.

Cool that will help pay for all the stuff fishing related I buy each year but I could do better, plus the fact that I was earning at all put a fire under me and I started a couple more fishing blogs.

Now I have 4 fishing blogs and two fishing money sites where I sell other people's products on eBay.

If you think you don't have time to run a business online, you're kidding yourself - you already work two full time jobs.

That includes the news. Trust me when I say that if something important happens you'll get the chance to hear all about it another time. Most news has absolutely no bearing on your daily life. If it's a tragedy, it's already happened and you can't stop it. If it's a miracle, people will be talking about it, and you'll hear about it. There's not much else on the news but traffic and weather, and those you can read about online, or hear on the radio. You can also read the news online, but that can lead to a time suck as well.

This kind of advice probably seems outrageous. It did to me when I discovered this secret in 1992. Turning off the tube doesn't just make time in your life, it creates a space for silence, and with silence often comes inspired thought.

The second easiest way is to sleep less. I hear Donald Trump only sleeps 4 hours a night. Back in the not so distant past it was fairly simple to hook up a credit card processor, (online gateway) to your web site and accept payment. There weren’t too many rules you had to follow to make this happen. The biggest hurdle you had to worry about was paying the entrance fee and keeping up with the monthly payments. But this game has become a bit more complicated in the past recent months.

You need to clearly define your shipping policies and return procedures on the front pages of your web site. You need to get real specific on tax information and how you will handle damaged shipments. This can slow you down for about two weeks. There is a ton of phone tag that goes on in this period and you will be shut out in the cold waiting for approval. Nobody ever expects this to happen but http://Authorize.net and Chase Manhattan are tightening down on policy.

Accepting Credit Cards Online Gets Trickier

The most common misconception I face is that accepting credit cards online is exactly the same process as accepting them in the storefront. This is simply not the case. You can accept credit cards in your store with a swipe machine that sits by your register. You will still need an online gateway to accept credit cards on your web site. This gets attached to your web site online. This gets connected to your bank account. Domain Registration giants are making a fortune from your parked domain names and their AdSense accounts. It was happening to me until a few months ago. Now I earn over $100 per month per domain name! Best of all, it's all on auto pilot.

It's easy to do and takes very little time or effort. Basically it involves using your spare domain names to let AdSense generate extra paychecks for you. I'll walk you through it step by step.

The most important part will be getting great content. But don't worry, we have that covered too. After some digging, I went with an inexpensive service called "Why Park?" that automatically builds fully search engine optimized sites in minutes with a few lines of really simple input. They even host the sites for you. Of course I admit I became a little biased toward their service after my first auto generated site got ranked #5 on Google just one week after it went live.

All you need is a free AdSense account. If you still need to get your account just visit http://www.google.com/adsense.

Step1: Get the Best Keywords; Straight from Google!

It's easier than ever to find the best keywords. I use Google's own keyword database to figure out which get the most search volume with the least competition. Give it a try at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.

Step 2: Hook Google with a Great Title!

Let's do a real project. Let's say we have a domain name to do with custom cakes. If we enter the word "cake" into Google's free keyword tool, we'll get plenty of great ideas for what's hot. "Cake" might be too general to want to compete against but "wedding cake" and "birthday cake" are both great niches.

Take your most important specific and general keyword phrases and put them together, specific first; general second. Let's use "wedding cake" and "cake". Now separate the keywords or phrases by a pipe (that vertical key over the Enter/Return key). We now have "wedding cake | cake". Now go back and grab one or two more relevant keywords like "birthday cake" and "baby shower cake" and combine them like this "wedding cake | cakes for birthdays, baby showers and more".

Now you've covered all your bases and build a fantastic keyword rich title that won't look like keyword spamming. More importantly it's one that people will actually read. You have singular and plural versions of "cake(s)", which will also help a lot.

Step 3: Get Noticed!

Now we will write a META description that will really get you noticed. This is important. Not only can this tip alone get you ahead of most competitors, but it's also what readers see of your site before they decide to visit. You need to write something for people, but that search engines will like. Don't worry. It's a lot easier than it sounds.

Take all of your keywords and line them up in order of importance. Since "wedding cake" gets more searches than any other, let's start there and use the same logic for the rest. Now we have, in order, "wedding cake", "cake", "birthday cake", and "baby shower cake." Be sure to improve your keyword prominence (relevance based on position) by using your best keyword within the first few words of the description, like this: "Wedding cakes made easy! Get great articles, recipes and decorating tips to make cakes for your special occasion. From triple-layer double chocolate birthday cakes to baby shower cup cake buffets; we have tips to make your special occasion delicious."

As you can see, we used all of our keywords without overloading the text and broke it up a little by adding some detail. It works great! Just try to keep the description at or under 250 characters (including spaces).

Step 4: Add Content That Google Loves!

Why Park (http://www.WhyParkWeb.com) does 99.9% of the work for you. All you have to do is enter your keywords into the article finder provided by the "Research Your Keywords" link located beside the keywords box.

Without using any imagination at all, I found 121 articles in a few seconds... "cake has 98 articles, "wedding cake" has 11 while "birthday cake" has 9 articles and "baby shower cake" has 3.

That's 121 articles total. This might not sound like a lot but at an average of about 1,000 words per article that's the size of an average Harry Potter book.

Add "wedding" and get another 788! That's 909 articles in 10 seconds. You get the idea - more general related keywords can take you over the top and give you a huge, content-rich search engine friendly site, in seconds!

Step 5: Triple Your AdSense Earnings

My click-through rate (CTR) tripled when I switched to this format.

Select ad size 336 x 280. If that's too big, try 300 x 250. And try to make your ad border and ad background colors the same as your Website's background color. It helps it blend in and take away some of the "advertisement" feel. It's also usually best to go with the standard blue hyperlink color for the actual links.

But with all that said, don't be afraid to experiment. This might be the cheapest controlled research you ever come across, so enjoy it. I change my ad colors (but not size) every so often to see what works best but the above method has worked best to date.

When people ask me "Is it really possible to make money online?", I always look at them with confusion.

Why? Because my answer is so straight forward...

The answer is "Of course it is...in fact it's possible to make money offline, in the desert, in outerspace and on Mars"

Sounds kinda weird I know, but let me explain. Most of us already know that making money online is not a myth, but yet we still have those doubts due to poor results or whatever the current excuse might be.

The TRUTH is, that making money online is no different to how people made money 100 years ago. The simple fact is that in order to be a successful internet marketer, we all need a few things in place, a few basic principles if you like...

1. A plan

It's not a good idea to spend all your time, money and effort in something that will "fall off the bandwagon" in 6 months time. In order to settle with a nice consistent paycheck each month, we need a plan of action. This could be something like...

step 1. find a desperate market that uses the internet a lot

step 2. find a product that they will want

step 3. sell that product to them

step 4. send "x" amount of emails that do nothing but help them with their problems and provide extra support for the product they have already bought through your affiliate link

step 5. survey your customers and ask them what else they would like to know (in exchange for a free copy of your upcoming product)

step 6. pay someone to create that product and put it up online

step 7. tell your existing customers that the product is available

step 8. offer an upsell

step 9. repeat steps 4 - 8 for 12 months whilst bringing in new prospects through article marketing and other common methods

That's a basic plan, but it's better to have it there in front of you so that you know what you should be working on each day.

But even then, we all know that even with a basic overall plan like that, that money is still not guaranteed. That comes down to one thing only...research.

If I knew that a market was desperate for a certain solution to a certain problem, and I knew where they hung out...don't you think that I would (as a marketing entrepreneur) do everything in my power (including paying people) to create that solution and go and present it to them?

Of course I would. It beats the heck out of guessing your way through and "hoping" that people will buy. End of the day, don't reinvent the wheel, just make it go faster...just like all those sports car companies do all the time (and make millions every month doing so)

The next problem we face is the FAILURE ITESELF to deliver products or services that people will want...even if we know what to deliver to our market. Let me explain...

Even if we KNOW what our market wants, it can still be a little daunting to create a product that meets their needs.

You can of course outsource your product creation. But in order to oursource anything, you better be damn sure that people will want it.

Moral of that...Do your research first before paying someone to create a product for you ! More prominently, did you realize that the very screen you're looking at right now has the ability to display information that can make you a millionaire?

I am talking about your ability to tap into the world's largest source of information...the internet.

You see, we are all guilty of spending waaay too much time in forums and end up asking questions we could have googled in 1 min flat and got ourselves an answer...

..yet we continue to be slaves to comfort and reassurance. The reassurance of a community (which is great, but you need to be working flat out to really kick your business into overdrive, so floating around forums in the day is NOT a good idea)

What I am leading to here is what we, as internet marketers should be embracing and exploiting everyday...

INFORMATION

It's the stuff that can make you a $1500 WSO, a lifetime niche business, an expert at seminars...you name it, INFORMATION is the lifeblood to wealth...whether you're selling it or just plain using it to sell more of a product.

Information is the gold. But why am I stating such an obvious point? Well, here's a real life example of why...

I just did a few searches on google, then ended up drilling down to some linked websites. I was lokking for a particular piece of information.

I was patient, calm and attentive. I wanted that info and I was damn sure that SOMEONE had published it online (everything about anything is available online folks).

So,

I found the information I was looking for, plus to my suprise I found some golden info that I could use for a new eBook/video/report/WSO...whatever..

This info is set to make me a few extra thousand per year, just from a simple search (that should be encouraging to all of those failing SEO people who can't make it to the front page of Google...I found my gold on Youtube and the 3rd page of Google...)

The ultimate point is, are you trying to push dead donkeys or are you learning things that can seperate you from the competition? The more stuff you know, the better off you will be. Even if it's something obscure, you can still hand it to other people for profit.

When it comes to internet marketing, don't just think of yourself as some wannabe expert or whatever...

..instead, think of yourself as an "information broker".

Just like you ignorantly pass hundreds of houses a day when looking for a new home, people plough through hundreds of websites and links each day, looking for the whole piece to their solution.

Why not be their "researcher", and gather all that info together (spending a few hours doing so) and then package it as if they MUST buy it and NEED the solution because it WILL MAKE THEIR LIVES BETTER and will SOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS and SAVE THEM TIME. I hope you've been paying attention...I won't say it again ;-)

One final point...

How many times have you been told to do something like "put up a squidoo lens, write an article, test your copy etc?" Yet, out of all those things you have been told, how many have you HONESTLY implemented?

Well, I'm sure many of you will say "none", or "a few". Which leads me on to the entire point of this post...

If your excuse to why you haven't done all those things is because of your lack of time, then you're not running a business... You see, all you are doing is filling your spare time with labour that ultimately leads to labour related income...

You see, a real business will sacrifice profits for investment in outsourcing. Areal business PERSON will understand that this internet marketing stuff requires AT LEAST 8 hours per day to see any near future results.

If you continue to work at this part time, you will ultimately see
part time results.

The reality is that this business, for the early part (just like any other type of business) requires extra hours and significant learning curves. You either cut your losses and go full bore into this stuff, or you accept second rate income for working part time hours.

Once you take the leap and truly commit, your income will reflect that. At which stage, you CAN invest in outworkers to develop new sites, new copy and test results for you etc.

Until then, treat it like any kind of start up business. Just because you're working at home in your homer simpson boxer shorts DOES NOT mean that you are a success.

Bite the grit and for god's sake, get some work done.

With action I mean the following, be willing to invest some of the money you have earned working for a boss.

Wouldn't you love to be one of those people on the other end of the line providing that information, working at home being your own boss, starting every day with checking your bank statements just to notice that you've made another heap of money while you where sleeping. It is always good to know the experiences that other people have had with the business opportunity that you are researching. Many people facing the threat of being laid off do not have a clear, transferable set of skills that they can use in their own business.
